Recovery isn’t about wiping the board clean. Recovery is learning how to function around all of the scars and open wounds inside of us.

What It’s About:

The official synopsis:

~~~
My GAWD with these cliffhanger endings! That last one was WILD! But we FINALLY get to see what the freakin’ deal with Nox is all about and why he was such a moody, broody A-hole throughout the series…and woah, that’s a lot of trauma to unload!
That was for sure the main….highlight? Not sure if it’s a highlight because it gets pretty dark and intense with learning about Nox’s dark past, but it’s definitely a huge noteworthy moment not only for this book but for the whole dang series.
I’m loving the idea of exploring the bonded sides of each them as separate beings/deities and how they have their own personalities…like the bonded side of Oli is still a stone-cold vicious bitch and I love her for her bloodthirst! It’s been a slow journey to learn more about these “upside-down” versions of the characters, but it’s also been very fun!
There’s not much to add at this point that isn’t spoilery, so Imma keep it brief and say the usual remarks I’ve made still stick with this one too: there are high exciting moments throughout but at the same time it feels very repetitive in other areas. The romance is great and I still love how the author manages to make each relationship feel unique and different from the rest of them amongst North, Gabe, Atlas, Gryphon, and Nox all with Oli. She makes it feel very organic and natural and realistic with the weariness and tension and doubt that rises up amongst them, but there’s still a mutual respect and understanding too because they know as a bonded group they have to learn to coexist either way.
And just like all the other books, holy CRAP THAT ending!! Jbree is a master at those juicy cliffhangers!
~~~

Not even death can keep us apart. Every part of you belongs to me, and I will tear any man apart who dares to get in my way. Bond or not.

— J.Bree, “Tragic Bonds”

~~~
What I Liked:
  1. All the Main Characters! I love the main six characters so much by now, of course some more than others….despite everything, Gryphon is still my number one guy with that dirty mouth of his!
  2. Learning Nox’s Dark History! Whats crazy is you go into this disturbing part right as you start the book too! Like you are dragged into the dark and see it firsthand so this book will instantly grab you and keep you locked in its talons if you’ve made it this far.
  3. Learning More History On the Bonded! As we’ve become aware of the bonded beings being literally a whole other presence inside the main six characters, it was good to get more answers on the history of this part of the worldbuilding/lore/magic system!
  4. That Cliffhanger Ending! Another crazy one that’ll make you want to start the next book instantly just like the others!
What I Didn’t Like:
  1. Too Many Side Characters…The minor characters/side cast feels very overcrowded by this point in my opinion, there’s just so many? I get overwhelmed when there’s too many faces/names to remember.
  2. Too Repetitive…It’s become apparent the overarching plot feels very repetitive by this point and that does make part of the story drag in parts for me, its more the characters that keep me attached to it by this point. I feel like this series could’ve been condensed down to like 5 books? I know why it’s 6 so each main character can get the cover attention and for aesthetics, but part of me wonders if that’s why it feels like it drags on more and more at this point in the series?
~~~

Conclusion:

Overall, like all the other books in this series, there are some major high points this one brings to the whole series, but there is also the nagging repetitiveness I know I bring up almost every review now…. I’m even getting annoyed at myself for how often I bring it up.

The plot to me is so-so by now, but the characters are really what do it for me! I love this cast of characters and their dynamics amongst each other and how they develop over the course of this series.

As we now move onto the final book, here’s hoping it all ends on a good note!

Thanks for reading!

My Fancast/Dreamcast: The Bonds That Tie series by J. Bree

Image from my bookstagram: @goodyreads

Here’s my latest fancast/dreamcast!

The Bonds That Tie series is a Urban Fantasy, Reverse Harem romance series that’s super popular in the book community and is about a young girl, Oleander Fallows, who ran away and is caught and brought back to her bonded when that was actually the last thing she wanted…but why? The mystery surrounding that remains to be seen unless you read why, but her 5 bonded sure don’t hide their confusion, hurt, betrayal, and rage over the decision and how it’s affected them.

It’s a very mix of X-Men and The Covenant kind of vibes for me, and I will admit these books are absolutely binge-worthy. Definitely give them a try and see who your favorite bonded is for Oli

(spoiler: mine’s a very close tie between Gryphon and North)

Before we get too into this, just a reminder that this is how ME, MYSELF, & I pictured the characters in these books…you are valid to disagree, but either keep scrolling or be respectful about verbalizing it or just don’t say anything at all. It’s not hard to do….I’m only sharing how I saw these characters in my head, and I really am not going to listen to rude, faceless internet people who don’t agree with my choices and feel the need to blast me on how wrong you think I am.

Unless its race/ethnicity related, I’m happy to be corrected in that regards, but otherwise I. Do. Not. Care…I am tired and just want to share my thoughts on MY website and don’t have the energy for someone who feels the need to make a snappy line at how wrong they think I am on my own platform to try and make themselves feel better for whatever reason…I will just delete the comment and carry on like it never existed and not give it any more thought.

Thank you

There you have it!

I’m really not in the mood for folks who feel the need to comment how off I am or not accurate I am to certain characters unless a character’s race was specifically mentioned that I unintentionally missed, but other than the main six characters, I feel like physical descriptions were also bare minimum in these books, so a lot of them I’m just going off vibes and who I just pictured as these characters in the books with actors/models/celebs I just know off the top of my head. Be kind in your disagreement or just keep scrolling (specifically off my website too), times are hard right now…

What It’s About:

The official synopsis:

~~~
Well suddenly North Draven completely flips my perception of him with this book! Its incredible to see how from one part of the series I can’t stand the guy, then BOOM suddenly I’m obsessed with him like so many other fans of these books…
This book once again continues exactly right off the cliffhanger ending that the previous books gave us, and it definitely starts off with a darker tone as Oli is actually once again a prisoner in an enemies’ war camp. To make things even worse, she has to come face-to-face with a evil face from her past whom she’d hoped to never see again…
She’s also trying to once again keep her bonds safe by blocking them out from her mind the whole time she’s there, so they can’t be discovered and hunted down. Anything past this point with describing the plot would just be spoilery, so I’ll try to just stop there!
There are some major highlights from this book and this series seriously gets better and better with each addition! Like I’ll admit I wasn’t crazy about book 1 while reading, but now I’m totally seeing it and am gabbing away with my fellow book lovers over which of the guys I like the most and how badass Oli is!
What I Liked:
  1. Oli’s “Other Side!” Oli’s bonded side is a dark, stone cold BITCH and I love her…like actually though I’m totally straight for her. I love the contrast between Oli and her because they’re polar opposites and I love a monster/dark character who sneaks out like that and takes over, kind of like a Jekyll/Hyde sort of thing. It was an interesting concept to learn about the bonds this book is that they have another being when they flip over to their bonded side (aka their eyes go demon black or pitch white). I didn’t know there was a second person in there with them.
  2. North Draven! North totally flipped my perception of him this book and he’s now a total book boyfriend addition I’d be happy to include in my extensive harem. Sure, he’s way overprotective and it gets annoying after awhile, but how his relationship with Oli develops in this book was just so chefs kiss with how he helped her and kept her safe
  3. That Cliffhanger Ending! J Bree is getting better and better with these killer cliffhangers she tosses out at us, and this one seriously had my jaw drop! Like I seriously didn’t see it coming and I’m so curious to see how she explains it in the next book!
  4. The Spice! This series gets better and better with each book and a huge reason for that is because the spice rating is going up up UP as well! Like DAYUMMMM especially goes to Gryphon and North!
  5. Kieran and Oli’s Event! I like that these two kind of bonded (not in that way) at the beginning chunk of this book and grew a mutual respect for each other and even though there’s still some tension, there’s a reluctant understanding there now that I can really appreciate.
What I Didn’t Like:
  1. Nox Continues To Be A D-Bag…I’m still failing to see what others see in him, he’s kind of a POS still in my opinion…I’m (im)patiently waiting to see why he’s some of my book friends’ favorite, cuz gurrrllllllll……we need to talk about your preferences.
  2. A Lot Of Side Characters Get Short Shafted…What happened to Sage and everyone else who isn’t Oli or her bonded? It felt like they just disappeared in this book which then makes me question their importance to the overall series? I could just be being extra judgey about it, but I also give side-eye when there’s a plethora of side characters and they only show up for a scene or two and in all honesty, the book would be fine if they got edited out.
  3. The Pacing Continues To Have a Slow Midpoint…Please refer to my previous reviews for this one because it’s essentially the same. BUT, and its a pretty nice butt, the spicy scenes make it a lot better too!
~~~

Mine. You’re mine. No one will hurt you again. Not me, not the others, not anyone. The shadows cannot harm you, they belong to you, as I do. We all do.

– J. Bree, “Blood Bonds”

~~~
Conclusion:
Overall, book three is the best of the bunch so far! We meet the big bad villain, the spice picks up, and characters and relationships are developing very nicely in my opinion. Sure, the pacing isn’t perfect still and this will be consistent with the rest of the books, but I’m so invested in the characters and what might happen that I can overlook it for the most part.
Like I said above, I’m defs going to be reading on and seeing what else can possibly happen, plus the other boys need some lovin too and I want to be there when it happens….yeah I said it, and I don’t care how weird that sounds! I am HERE for the spice….Spice is LIFE!
Thanks for Reading!
Oh, my girl likes that? You want me to kill everyone who dares to look at you? I will. I’m not a good man, not like the rest of your Bonds. I’m good for you, and fuck the rest of them. If you want blood, Sweetness, I’ll give it to you. I’ll give you whatever you want.”
– J. Bree, “Savage Bonds”
What It’s About:
The Official synopsis:
~~~

Alright, so now were getting somewhere!

This book felt like actually so much better than book one now that we’ve finally gotten some pages behind us, we’re familiar with the characters by now, and some secrets that have been kept hidden are finally coming to light. Not all of them, unfortunately, but enough to keep you wanting more and more and more as this series progresses.

Book 2 felt like it had some of the same issues for me, which was just a very slow midpoint and a lot of the conflict amongst Oli and her 5 bonded are just becoming a big miscommunication trope that’s getting incredibly repetitive…like part of me just wants Oli to finally come clean to the guys so they can stop being such d-bags to her because their fragile egos…but I also suppose the author is doing her job if she’s making me feel this strongly about the characters!

The big thing with this book are the shifts in the dynamics of the relationships amongst Oli and her bonded. You know exactly who she’s hanging around with because her relationships with Gryphon, North, Nox, Gabe, and Atlas are all so different from one another and so dramatically stand out. There is definitely no repetition with these, and the author does an amazing job of developing each individual relationship at its own pace. Some are warming up to Oli faster than others, and others have their reasons for keeping her at arms length way more than the others do, but we also don’t know all those reasons from their end either…there’s obviously secrets being kept on both sides of this battlefield, at it’s creating quite an interesting story to say the least!

~~~
If you burn, I burn with you. You’re not alone, Oli, not for one second. I told you before, I’m not afraid.”
– J. Bree, “Savage Bonds”
~~~

What I Liked:

  1. FINALLY Some Romance! We Have Spice People!! It’s sparse, but finally we see something along these lines and at this point I’ll take anything!
  2. Brutus! Oli has a NEW man and his name is Brutus! He’s actually a shadow puppy made by Nox who first appeared at the end of book 1 during that battle, but I guess he took a liking to Oli and sticks around…hey I’m all about animal companions so no complaints from me!
  3. The Development Changes Between ALL Her Bonded! So book 1 was all about how Oli was keeping secrets and her 5 bonded were mad at her and had written her off as a spoiled, ungrateful brat, but then they realize that there is WAYYYYYY more going on than what meets the eye with her and that she is definitely holding things back from them in terms of information and just exactly how powerful her abilities truly are. So a big part of this book is all of them slowly taking her in with a new pair of eyes and slowly warming up to her, but each at their own pace. Some are able to do so faster than others of course too. It was impressive how the author made each and every relationship Oli had with each guy feel unique in this sense. These books seem to have a lot of repetition in some ways, but not when it comes to the relationships and how they develop amongst her cast of characters.

What I Didn’t Like:

  1. Midpoint Pacing Continues To Be Slow and Repetitive…Once again the midpoint was just very repetitive in the same ways that book 1 was, luckily I’m invested enough in the characters by this point, but I will say if you’re not someone who’s very into character-driven stories like this one seems to be so far, you might struggle.
  2. I Feel Like The Secrets Are Becoming A Miscommunication Trope By This Point…Okay so the secret keeping that Oli is doing worked for book 1, but now it’s starting to get on my nerves a little bit. These guys are putting you through the wringer and making you feel like an absolute garbage human being because they don’t know the full story because you’re not telling them the full story….shouldn’t you maybe clue them in to some degree? Like either Oli has a degradation kink with some of these guys, or I’m just starting to get miscommunication trope vibes from this. And maybe I’m also just impatient for them to learn why she’s holding out whatever it is on them, but by this point I’m starting to fail to see why she takes this abuse STILL by this point in the story. It’s kind of adding into the repetitiveness I’m critiquing in the previous point.

Conclusion:

Overall, book 2 definitely improved off of book 1 in terms of character development and the fact that there’s a glimpse of actual romance AND spice in this book! There’s definitely still some slower midpoints that I can see some readers really getting bored with, but if you’re really invested in the characters by now, this shouldn’t be an issue!

There’s another cliffhanger that you definitely don’t see coming, so also be prepared to want to jump IMEDIATELTY into the next book! Which is what I’m doing now…

Thanks for Reading!

Or, I guess, she just wears her damage where we can all see it. I bury mine as deep as I can, as far down below my skin as possible, so I can pretend it’s not killing me slowly, painfully, constantly.

– J. Bree, “Broken Bonds”

What It’s About:

The official synopsis:

~~~
Okay, this is a series that has been recommended to me for so long now, and it’s become a crazy popular book series amongst my social circles in the book community, so it was naturally only a matter of time before I started them myself…and for the most part, I’m happy I did! It’s only the first book in a 6 book series I have to remind myself, so while I see the potential in the story and the characters, it’s not quite there yet for me…
BUT, and its a pretty big but, I try not to judge a whole series based off just the first book—Throne of Glass and ACOTAR are both an excellent example of this—so I’ll have to keep reading on to really be able to judge!
These books have been described as like a reverse harem X-Men and yeah, I’d say that’s a pretty accurate description of it, just less comic-book style with the superhero names and the matching uniforms, and more gothic with a mix of X-Men and that 2006 movie, The Covenant, starring Steven Strait, Taylor Kitsch, and babies Sebastian Stan and Chace Crawford. Needless to say, but I’m digging the books based off these comparisons alone!
The story revolves around Oleander (love the unique name btw) or Oli for short, and she lost her parents at age 14, and its now 5 years later where she’d been found running from her own bonded for some reason we don’t know about. She ain’t saying anything to anybody, not even her 5 hot potential bonds who found her, and are all freakin’ pissed she ditched them all. They literally drag her ass back to Draven University where other bonded and their mates go to train and strengthen their abilities, and this first book is about her finding her place in this new surrounding, keeping her secrets, and figuring out who she can trust, and if they’re all truly safe from who’s hunting her…
Not too much to report other than what I have below on what I liked and didn’t like, but I can say I want to keep reading on to see how things play out, and not just because I have the urging from many bookstagram friends, I’m genuinely curious myself!
~~~

He has no idea of what I’ve sacrificed for him.”

– J.Bree, “Broken Bonds”

~~~
What I Liked:
  1. The Mystery Surrounding Why She Ran Away! While a lot of the writing is pretty straight forward and easy to follow, one thing that really drives the story is the mystery surrounding Oli before the start of the story and she’s found by her bonded: where was she? what was she doing? who was she with? why was she trying to stay hidden? why did she run away in the first place? We don’t know any of these answers even after reading the first book, but there’s plenty of hints that wherever she was, it was nowhere good.
  2. Oli is, Like, Scary Powerful! I love a badass, strong lead female character, and Oli is another one to definitely add to the list. She’s a great character, flawed and unapologetically herself, and you find out in the story that she has some wicked powers that she has to keep hidden because it will “bring destruction to them all” like its not a big deal…I’m definitely curious to see what happens here!
  3. A Lot of Favorite Romance Tropes! We got forced proximity, bully romance, grumpy/sunshine, alphamales, touch her and die, reverse harem, protect her at all costs, and I’m actually just here for it all…like I’m actually asking God when is it my turn to have my own RH???
What I Didn’t Like:
  1. There Was Hardly Any Romance…The spice was like a shriveled up half a pepper for this one unfortunately. I get it though, this book is setting the scene, and the guys are all pissed at her for ditching them and then they couldn’t get their massive power ups to stroke their dicks I MEAN EGOS! whoops!!!! But yeah, the romance was flippin’ nonexistent in this one and its a REVERSE HAREM…there’s 5 dudes and not one of them got any action! Not to worry, I am told good things come to those who wait with these.
  2. Pacing Really Slowed Down In the Middle…As this book feels very character-driven in terms of plot, if you’re not feeling the characters by the midpoint, you’re gonna struggle. It gets a bit slow with the tedious and (kinda) childish mean girl drama, the bonds all being pissed at her, and Oli just being Oli which isn’t a bad thing, but she’s keeping secrets and she ain’t opening up quite yet…
  3. I’m Hoping for More Worldbuilding…I want to know more about the history or lore of the bonds and like why they are around, how they came to be
  4. Nox Draven is a DOUCHE…Well and so is his brother North in all honesty…they can choke. Nox just seems so petty and immature, and that’s coming from ME…Nox’s behavior doesn’t strike me as a college professor, so I’m sorry to say Lance Orion he is NOT.
Conclusion:
Overall, I liked but didn’t LOVE this book, but it’s also the first book in a 6 book series that everyone says is a giant slowburn, so I can’t judge too much about what didn’t happen. What I did enjoy was the cast of characters and the whole cast dynamics, the mysteries surrounding Oli and where she was, and the sexual tension that is peaking out from beneath the covers and (hopefully) wants to come out to play sooner rather than later!
I’m not wholly convinced yet, but I can definitely see hints of why so many of my inner circle of the book community consider this one of their favorite all-time series! Let’s hope I can soon join them…
Thanks for Reading!
